- Access Problems
Remote Access Info | Remote Access Problems | Wireless Access
This page includes tips and workarounds for correcting problems encountered when logging into or accessing the law library's electonic resources. If none of these solutions applies to your particular circumstances, please contact Creighton Miller at cmiller@law.ua.edu or (205) 348-2373. Please be sure to include as much of the following information as possible in your email or to have access to it when you call:
- The precise problem you encountered;
- The location from which you encountered the problem (inside the law school, on campus but not within the law school, home, etc.);
- The operating system and version of your computer (Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 98, Mac, etc.);
- If you encountered the problem off campus, the name of your internet service or broadband provider;
- The name and version of your web browser (Internet Explorer 6.0, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape 4.8, etc.);
- Whether you are using any form of internet accelerator or broadband manager (AOL for Broadband, Netzero HiSpeed, Netscape Web Accelerator, etc.);
- Whether you are using a personal firewall program
Cookies
In order to allow remote access to library materials, our proxy server software must set a cookie on your computer. (We do not use these cookies to track personally identifiable information in any way.) To use our materials from outside the law school, you may need to set your browser to accept cookies.
In Internet Explorer, select "Tools" from the menu bar at the top of the window and choose "Internet Options..." Next, select the tab labeled "Privacy" and make sure the sliding bar is set to medium high or lower.
Alternatively, you can set your privacy level to a higher setting and override the setting only for our proxy server. At the bottom of the "Privacy" box, choose the button labeled "Edit..." and enter "proxy.law.ua.edu," click "allow," and click "OK."
For help setting other web browsers to use cookies, contact Creighton Miller.
America Online (AOL)
A number of users have experienced trouble accessing library electonic materials while using AOL or AOL for broadband. These problems can occur even while using laptops on the wireless network within the law school.
The simplest solution to this problem is to avoid accessing our materials through AOL. You can continue to run and use AOL on your home computer or laptop, but when you need to access law library databases and similar electronic materials, simply minimize your AOL windows and launch another web browser. If you are using a typical Windows based machine, a link for the Internet Explorer browser should be found in the "Programs" list available from your "Start" menu.
Using Internet Explorer or another web browser outside of your AOL interface should fix the problem.
NetZero HiSpeed
The software that the law library uses to provide access to remote materials is apparently incompatible with the NetZero HiSpeed service. To access these materials, you will need to temporarily disable NetZero HiSpeed. There should be an icon for HiSpeed in the system tray at the bottom, right corner of your screen. This icon should include an option to disable HiSpeed.
Alternatively, you can permanently block HiSpeed from attempting to control access to law library remote materials:
- Launch Internet Explorer
- From the Internet Explorer menu bar, go to "Tools" | "Internet Options..."
- Click on the "Connections" tab
- Scroll through the Dial-up settings to locate NetZero, then click on NetZero and click "Settings..."
- Under "Proxy Server," click "Advanced..."
- In "Exceptions," scroll to the end of the list, then type this exact sequence, complete with semi-colon:
; proxy.law.ua.edu
- Keep hitting OK until all the windows close and you are back in Internet Explorer.
