Remote Access Info | Remote Access Problems | Wireless Access
Many users have noted problems accessing E-Reserves and library databases while working wirelessly on the UA campus. Unfortunately, Law/Remote resources are simply not available over the main UA campus wireless network at this time. This problem results from security settings on the campus wireless network set by UA Network & Computer Support.
These resources, however, are available over both the law school's wireless network and UA's secure VPN system. To access E-Reserves or law library databases, please use one of these options, as detailed below.
Within the Law School
Laptop computers properly connected to the law school wireless network should be able to access all law library resources without problem. However, some locations in the law school are actually covered by both the law school's wireless network and the main campus network. If your computer can not access law library materials, you may have connected inadvertently to the general UA wireless system. Please check to make sure you are actually on the law school network (jbiasmf12), and reconnect to the proper network if you are not.
In Widows XP:
- Check your current network connection by hovering your mouse pointer over the wireless connection icon in the system tray at the very bottom, right corner of your windows screen.
- In most cases, the wireless connection icon will be a small picture of a computer with a screen that changes color as information is transmitted over the wireless network.
- Users of some internet security suites or third party wireless card drivers may have a different icon.
- The law school's wireless network is named jbiasmf12. If your computer is connected to any other wireless system, please reconnect to the law school system. With your mouse pointer over the wireless connection icon, right-click. Choose "View Available Wireless Networks".
- From the resulting screen, find the network labeled jbiasmf12 and click "Connect".
- The law school wireless network is encrypted and requires a wireless access key.
- For the wireless access key, other connection problems or further assistance, contact the law school Technology Department.
If you have problems accessing Law/Remote materials while connected to the law school wireless network, please seek assistance from David Lowe or Creighton Miller in the library.
Other Campus Locations
(Outside the Law School)
To access restricted materials wirelessly from campus locations outside the law school, you must use the UA Virtual Private Network (VPN). Merely connecting through the general UA wireless network will not give you access to these resources.
If you are a law student and need help configuring your laptop for VPN access, please bring the computer to David Lowe in the library.
For information on configuring UA VPN access yourself, please see Using the UA VPN from the UA HelpDesk. Note: as detailed in the linked directions, you must register your MyBama password for VPN access before setting up a VPN connection. This is a simple and relatively painless step, but a necessary one.
For further assistance or information regarding the VPN, contact the UA HelpDesk at 348-HELP or Help.Desk@ua.edu.
