Finding Biographical Information on Attorneys and Judges
[Info on Attorneys] [Info on Judges]

Information about attorneys

Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory. (Leisure reading area at KF 190 .M31; older editions are shelved downstairs at that same call number.) This annual multi-volume set provides addresses, limited biographical and educational data, ratings, firm membership and practice specialties. Information on some international attorneys is also included. Martindale-Hubbell does not provide a comprehensive listing of practicing attorneys; nevertheless, it is probably the most complete directory that is currently published. The set is available online to authorized Lexis-Nexis password holders through the MARHUB library. A version of the source is also available on the Internet at www.martindale.com/locator/home.html, but this version lacks the lawyer ratings found in the print set.

American Bar. (Ready reference at KF 190 .A44; older editions are shelved downstairs at that same call number.) This annual two-volume set is organized in much the same way as Martindale-Hubbell. The American Bar is not, however, as comprehensive in its coverage.

Who's Who in America. (Ready reference at E 176 .W642; older editions are shelved downstairs at that same call number) & Who's Who in American Law (Ready reference at KF 353 .W5; older editions are shelved downstairs at that same call number). These works contain brief information, usually including addresses, offices, titles, and accomplishments. Who's Who publications restrict their listings to attorneys who are either politicians or leaders in their professions. Who's Who in America is also available online to authorized Westlaw password holders-select the MARQUIS database.

West's Legal Directory. This legal directory (Westlaw database identifier: WLD) contains basic information about attorneys nationwide and in Canada. Researchers may find some listings in WLD that do not appear in Martindale-Hubbell. The WLD is also available on the Internet at www.wld.com.

Westlaw also provides several directories of international attorneys. Simons European Law Directory (database identifier: WLD-SIMONS) contains profiles of law firms and attorneys throughout Europe. Havers' Companion to the Bar (database identifier: WLD-HAVERS) "contains profiles of barristers who have been called to the Bar of England and Wales." The WLD-CANADA database provides brief biographical information on Canadian attorneys and firms.

Lexis' NEWS and LEGNEWS libraries, which contain the text of many newspaper and magazine articles, can be fruitful sources for biographical information about attorneys and judges. Running a terms-and-connector search for a name in either the CURNWS or ARCNWS files will produce all stories in which that name has appeared. Lexis' People and LGLBIO libraries also contain several files that include biographical information. Westlaw's ALLNEWS database also contains the text of numerous articles; a search in this database will produce results similar to those received by users of Lexis' NEWS library.

Many lawyers and law firms now maintain sites on the Internet. These sites can be found through directories such as Findlaw: Lawyers and Law Firms (www.findlaw.com/14firms/index.html) and WashLaw WEB-Law Firms (www.washlaw.edu/lawfirms.html).

The Alabama Legal Directory (Ready reference at KF 192 .A38) and the annual directory of bar members published in conjunction with the The Alabama Lawyer (P A318 in the periodical stacks) both contain very basic information on Alabama attorneys. Similar information on graduates of the UA School of Law can be found in the University of Alabama Law School Directory of Graduates, 1872-1970 (Ready reference at KF 292 .Z4 Z513) and the 1985, 1990, and 1995 editions of The University of Alabama School of Law Alumni Directory (Ready reference at KF 292 .A4 A52.)

For historical questions involving Alabama lawyers and judges, see Thomas M. Owen's History of Alabama and Dictionary of Alabama Biography (Reserve at F 326 .O9 1978), a four-volume reprint of a classic 1921 work. The Alabama Lawyer contains obituaries of Alabama lawyers that can also be helpful to researchers.

Information about judges

The American Bench. (Ready reference at KF 8700 .A19 A47; older editions are shelved downstairs at that same call number.) This single-volume work provides extensive biographical information on state and federal judges.

The Almanac of the Federal Judiciary. (Ready reference at KF 8700 .A19 A46 1992) This two-volume set provides highly subjective information, derived from interviews with attorneys, on the courtroom styles of federal judges. Westlaw password holders can search this source in the AFJ database.

Judicial Yearbook. (Ready reference at KF 8700 .A19 J835; older editions are shelved downstairs at that same call number.) This semiannual directory contains limited biographical sketches of judges on federal courts and state appellate courts. Each issue also includes a convenient list of recent judicial confirmations, nominations, and elections. The Judicial Yearbook is available to Westlaw password holders in the JUDYB database.

Judicial Staff Directory. (Ready reference at KF 8700 .A19 J83; older editions are shelved downstairs at that same call number.) This annual directory of federal courts includes basic biographies of judges and key court personnel.

Lexis' NEWS and LEGNEWS libraries and Westlaw's ALLNEWS database can be searched for newspaper and magazine articles that mention a particular judge. Use a terms-and-connectors search query, as described in the preceding section on attorneys.

If the judge in question was a figure of historical importance, good biographies and historical studies are usually available. A keyword search on ATTICUS using a judge's first and last names will list any relevant treatises in our library's collection. Another good starting point for notable jurists is The Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States (Ready reference at KF 8742 .A35 093 1992.)
