JAY WESLEY MURPHY COLLECTION

Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of Alabama School of Law Jay Wesley Murphy’s personal and professional papers comprise the Murphy Collection.

Murphy earned J.D. and LL.M. degrees from George Washington University before joining the University of Alabama law faculty in 1947.  He was a member of the faculty for 34 years, assuming Professor Emeritus status upon his retirement in 1981.  He served as a visiting professor of law at George Washington University, the University of Kentucky, the University of Arkansas, and New York University.  Professor Murphy offered courses in Constitutional Law, Labor and Employment Law, Conflict Resolution and World Peace, Contracts, and Law and Extraterrestrial Intelligence.  Murphy authored numerous law review articles on issues of civil rights and constitutional law.

During his tenure at the University of Alabama he spent time abroad, serving as a visiting lecturer at Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea, where he helped to establish the College of Law at Seoul National University. While in Korea he and his wife, Alberta Brown Murphy, authored two books: Legal Education in a Developing Nation: The Korea Experience (1965), and Legal Profession  in Korea; The Judicial Scrivener and Others (1967).

Murphy and his wife were well-known civil rights activists dating to the early 1950s.  He was a member of the Alabama Advisory Board to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission and one of the first directors of the Tuscaloosa chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Murphy was also one of the nation’s leading labor arbitrators.  Throughout his career he arbitrated cases in industries including agriculture, textiles, shipbuilding, health care, and transportation.  He was a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, and the American Arbitration Association.

Professor Murphy’s papers cover the range of his personal and professional experiences.  Hundreds of arbitration case files and audiotapes of arbitration sessions are available in the collection.  Murphy’s broad and eclectic interests are represented by materials concerning world peace, civil rights, extraterrestrial intelligence, and labor conflict.  Murphy’s teaching methods and successes are highlighted through a variety of notes, tapes, and transcripts of classroom presentations and discussions, and by an extensive selection of his books which have been catalogued by the Bounds Law Library.  The collection offers researchers a wealth of information about, and insight into, the life of an outstanding labor relations expert and law professor.
