RULES FOR THE USE OF SPECIAL COLLECTIONS MATERIALS
(Revised May 5, 1999)
Access to Materials:
- Patrons who wish to use Special Collections material should make their requests at the Reference Desk of the Bounds Law Library. At that point a librarian will provide reference assistance, finding aids, or collection guides, and record any requests for material.
- Special Collections materials should be retrieved by a member of the Bounds Law Library staff on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 4:15 PM. Student assistants are not authorized to retrieve Special Collections materials in the evenings, on weekends, or holidays.
- Patrons are required to sign a logbook prior to using materials. Special Collections materials will be used in the John C. Payne Special Collections area. Photocopy requests should be made to the librarian on duty. Since the condition of many Special Collections documents is fragile, not all materials can be photocopied. The charge for photocopying is ten cents per sheet, payable at the circulation desk.
- Special Collections materials may not be taken out of the reading room, and must be returned at the end of working hours. Requests for variations to this guideline, including those by Law School faculty, must be referred to the Special Collections librarian.
- Patrons should return all materials examined to a staff member.
Housekeeping and Usage:
- There must be neither food nor drink in the Payne area.
- While using Special Collections materials, patrons should take notes in pencil. The staff will furnish pencils and paper on request. Patrons may not mark on Special Collections materials, nor may they use sticky-notes or other adhesive bookmarks.
- In general, patrons should examine no more than one container of archival materials at a time, and should preserve the exact order of items within folders. Similarly, patrons should examine no more than five volumes at a time from the closed stacks.
